Eastern Purple Coneflower
Taxonomic ClassificationAsteraceae family
Native Americans used Echinacea purpurea for many years as a folk medicine, but it was recognized to produce compounds that stimulate immune response. Several classes of chemicals from E. purpurea are currently used to show this immune response. For example alkamides, and echinacosides are used, but most often chemicals are not separated, and what is given to the patient is an extract of the plant.
